Hilltop Montessori is located on over six aces in the wooded, natural setting of The Town of Mt Laurel. The school is a certified LEED building with the U.S. Green Building Council and houses 200 students and more than 30 faculty. Natural elements allow for a beautiful learning environment, which includes daylighting, a state of the art HVAC system, natural building materials and edible gardens.
Playgrounds on the school campus integrate all natural surroundings with meaningful play structures to promote numerous opportunities for socialization within a safe area.
The building itself is a testament to sustainable construction and also displays student artwork, such as this student-created papier mâché dove greeting guests in the vestibule. Open windows allow for natural light streaming into the classrooms, creating a bridge between inside and the beautiful wooded surroundings. Open-beam construction inside the facility demonstrates construction techniques and also more effectively distributes air and light.
Outdoor learning areas offer playgrounds, a native plant trail, edible gardens and working bee hives. Our elementary and middle school students use the Mt Laurel playground, the community hiking trails, soccer field and basketball courts for physical education instruction. With over six acres of property, the students have ample room for exploration of nature and outdoor experiences.
The inside of our LEED certified building is a working model of energy efficiency. The students use the open beam construction and self adjusting lights for learning opportunities regarding water, air and light. State of the art HVAC units continually bring fresh air into the rooms and all natural indoor furnishings foster healthy living initiatives.
In addition to plentiful outdoor garden areas, composting bins and a greenhouse, Hilltop has a working apiary. Stationed near the entrance to the school, our bees produce organic honey which is used by the students for healthy recipes.
