Hilltop Montessori School
Hilltop
Montessori School's mission is to provide quality Montessori education in an environment which fosters a child's love of learning and respect for self, others, community and the world.
Hilltop is a harmonious educational experience for children, where they are taught high academic achievement, independence, brotherhood, and a responsibility to school, family, themselves, society and our earth. Our teaching methods are based on the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori, a physician, educator and humanitarian who devoted her life to the study and welfare of children.
Our US Green Building Council LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified "green" school is designed to be not only beautiful but healthful, with natural lighting and eco-friendly materials. Hilltop’s Board of Directors, administration, teachers, staff, students, and families invite you to explore this website and discover how we help our children grow.
We have limited enrollment opportunities remaining for the 2010-2011 school year in some classes. Interested parents should call (205) 437-9343 to schedule a tour and learn more about our admissions procedures.

What does it mean to be GREEN?
In 2008, Hilltop Montessori School was awarded a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification plaque by the US Green Building Council. The plaque recognizes a long-standing and continuing commitment to environmental education and sustainable building practices on the part of the school. Find out more about our Green School here. The following list details our beliefs as educators:
- Hilltop Montessori School maintains a commitment to the founding principles and philosophies of Montessori education.
- All children have an innate drive and ability to learn.
- The educational community should follow the child and meet each child’s needs.
Each child has a preferred learning style and progresses at an individual rate. - The teacher must assess the child in an ongoing way and facilitate growth by challenging the learner.
- The role of the teacher is to facilitate learning in a safe, secure, stimulating environment that promotes freedom of choice, encourages trial of new experiences and promotes learning.
- A successful educational experience requires participation of the child, parents, teachers and the community.
- Parental involvement is integral to a child’s academic, social and emotional success.
- Each teacher has a commitment to growth that is exemplified by an ongoing personal development both in education theory and practice.
- Hilltop Montessori School seeks to promote environmental stewardship through curriculum elements and through its building design.
