The Annual Fund 2014-Why it Matters

For those not familiar with development in non-profit corporations and private schools in particular, the annual giving program is always a source of confusion. Parents that are new to independent schools question how their simple participation in an annual giving program will enhance the school’s programming, particularly when they might just be able to write a $10 check. They also question how a small amount can truly impact the school overall and they might even feel that tuition should cover everything the school should need. What they may not realize is that regardless of the amount given, demonstrating a high internal percentage of parent and other stakeholder participation allows the institution to be more competitive in grant cycles. Foundations and individuals support successful projects that are able to showcase their true impact on the community they serve.

Our annual fund this year at HMS will be especially vital as we begin our capital campaign for Phase Three of our LEED rated school. It is our hope to be able to break ground as soon as possible on a new building on campus that will house a gym, stage and theater, an updated music room, artist’s studio for classes and a community kitchen. Our current kitchen houses a “catering kitchen” but we would like our new kitchen to be a combination of a teaching kitchen that can be used after hours for the community and a working kitchen that serves up healthy school lunches on site. With such expansive outdoor gardens that grow so many healthy foods, the merging of an open kitchen that is sustained by our own garden beds will allow for cost effective and nutritious lunches for our little ones.

Our 2014 Annual Fund will begin soon and we hope you’ll join the staff and board with their 100% participation. Each year, the staff and board each individually contribute and we hope everyone will give a gift that is personally significant to them. Hilltop is extremely excited about our updated strategic plan and our future-thank you for your participation in making that happen for our students and for generations to come. And, of course, all donations are tax deductible as allowed by law.
